Florence Knoll

A pioneer of modern interior and furniture design. Born in 1917 Saginaw, Michigan, Knoll graduated from Kingswood School before studying at the Cranbrook Academy of Art where she became a protégée of Eero Saarinen.

Her early career saw her influenced by the leaders of the Modernist Bauhaus movement. Knoll’s American interpretation of minimalism created furniture pieces that became design icons of the 20th century. Know for her belief that architects should naturally contribute their design ability to furniture, a relationship which is evident throughout her works.

She received many awards and accolades during her career including the American Institute of Architects’ Industrial Design Gold Medal, the American Society of Interior Designers’ Total Design Award and the National Medal of Arts and gained recognition as one of the most outstanding designers of her generation.
